lulz. You know that the best way to do this is to move to the Middle East, right? Because trust me, there's no incentive to learn a language like that look on people's faces when you're at a restaurant and they've already ordered and the waitress is standing there looking at you expectantly and you're like, "Guys, I've only deciphered the first two items on this 8-page menu!"

Oh damn, I'm wasting time typing this. Back to the books!

But yeah, on a more serious note learning a language is incredibly rewarding. Wait until the first time you say something to a native/ fluent Arabic speaker and they understand you! Whoop, it's such an awesome feeling.

go you! and I know that word, it's the same in Hebrew, or very close. Probably couldn't read it in either language though.

congratulations again. It's a big moment!

Hindi? Wow. That must have been interesting (and frustrating in equal parts!) I know what you mean about seeing words - I feel like I want to pull out all my notes and duel with every arabic word I come across now. Though I would likely lose at this point. Whipped by a word. How humiliating.

Oh, and the word was 'bayt', meaning house. It was three characters long. But I *so* nailed it. Hard. (Cackle)

sweet! I had a somewhat similar experience (the frustration part, not the eureka moment) while studying Hindi. Why can't the letters look like what they sound like, like in Hebrew, I bemoaned one evening. And then I realized I've seen (and still can't read) the Hebrew alphabet a million times, at least certain key words.

I wish you well on Arabic, and think you'll make someone a great travelling companion /translator one of these days! I'm sticking with Spanish, English and a tiny bit of Portuguese for now. I'll leave the non Romance foreign languages to someone better suited for them!

Do we get to find out what your word was?
