I actually did know! I went to a South African cooking demonstration once and they were making them and telling them about us and making us envy them their way cool accents. So sad. Just Amurrrrican over here. Oh, and I have a memory like a steel trap for random stuff (if you haven't noticed). That helped, too.

you can read the article here if you like: (and delete this if you think I'm pimping myself) http://www.bootsnall.com/articles/09-06/15-incredible-desserts-you-should-try-on-the-road.html

You know of koeksisters?! Gasp! Wobble. Faint!

They are truly delicious - but I have always struggled to describe them to people in a way that conveys their sheer yummy nature. "It is fried dough drowned in syrup until it cannot possibly take in any more" just never seemed to really do it. So I'd love to see your take on them!

I know what you mean about culture of self - as popeye once so eloquently put it, "I yam what I yam". :)

hey! I mention koeksisters in an upcoming article on sweets not to miss while traveling. How serendipitous. (and can I tell you the first several months I read you, I somehow failed to register that you were South African or ESA?)

Cultural identity is touchy. We all, de facto, have one, but living amongst people who seem much more attached to and comfortable with theirs always throws me for a loop as well. And it doesn't help that I'm often asked what the United States' national dance, national food, etc are. Tricky, I say. Childhood presentations notwithstanding, sometimes the culture of self is the only one I really care to pontificate on. Go grandparents.
